HVAC Maintenance Tasks That Help You Save Energy and Money

June 5, 2020

Saving energy helps you save money and the environment. But how do you lower your home’s energy consumption without sacrificing comfort? Read on to learn four HVAC maintenance tasks that can help you save energy in your Canton, Ohio, home.

Change the Air Filter

It’s an easy HVAC maintenance, yet many homeowners overlook it. Your HVAC system’s air filter stops particles from collecting in the unit. As a result, it prevents them from straining the system and making it work harder to heat and cool your home.

A clean air filter also keeps those same particles from recirculating in your home and worsening your indoor air quality. Make sure to change your air filter at least once every 90 days. If you suffer from allergies or have pets, change it every month.

Use Your Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans don’t generate cold and hot air like an air conditioner or furnace. But they help you reduce your reliance on your HVAC system, lowering your energy bills. In the summer, set your ceiling fans to rotate in a counterclockwise direction. In the winter, make sure they rotate in a clockwise direction. Turn the fans off in unoccupied rooms.

Clear Around the Outdoor Unit

The outdoor component of your HVAC systems should have at least two feet of clearance around it. First, make sure there isn’t anything on top of the unit. Next, trim any bushes that may have grown around the unit. This will help it operate better.

Schedule HVAC Maintenance

Scheduling regular HVAC maintenance is vital to preserving your heating and cooling equipment. A professional service technician can find any developing issues and repair them on the spot. They can also provide additional energy-saving tips. You should schedule a tuneup for your air conditioner in the spring and another for your heater in the fall.
