Frequently Asked Questions
Heating and cooling options can be confusing because of so many choices and contractors vying for your business. Our goal is to help our Canton air conditioning and heating consumers be informed of the value of the products and services being purchased. These are some of the Frequently Asked Questions we hear from our customers. We hope you find the answers informative and helpful.
- What is MERV?
MERV means Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It’s represented by a number that rates the efficiency of air filters. MERV ratings can range from 1 to 16. The higher the MERV rating, the more efficient the filter is at removing dust and other particles from your air. While no filter can remove all dust and allergens, choosing a filtration system with a high MERV rating will reduce the number of particles circulating through your Massillon, North Canton or Canton air conditioning and heating system, doing a better job of cleaning the air in your home.
- What is AFUE?
Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency or AFUE is the standard measurement of efficiency for gas and oil-fired furnaces. The AFUE number represents the amount of fuel that is being used to heat your home as opposed to being wasted. A higher AFUE rating means a heating system is more efficient. Quality Heating & Cooling offers a full line of furnaces with AFUE ratings as high as 96 percent. If you have an older furnace with an AFUE of 80 percent and replace it with a newer furnace with an AFUE of 96%, you could reduce your heating bill by up to 25 percent. Over several years, this savings may pay you back for the cost of your new furnace.
- What is SEER?
Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio or SEER is a rating of the energy efficiency of an air conditioning system or heat pump. A higher SEER number means the air conditioning system is more energy efficient, which conserves energy and saves you money on your utility bill. Air conditioners must have a minimum SEER rating of 13.0. Quality Heating & Cooling offers air conditioners with SEER ratings as high as 20.0, which is an extremely energy efficient cooling system.

- How often should I replace my air filter?
It depends on the type of filter you have and your home environment. Typically, you should check your filter every 2 to 3 weeks during the height of the heating or cooling seasons. In the Spring and Fall, checking your filter every month should be sufficient. You should check your filter more often if you have pets or if a smoker lives in the home. For specific questions about your home’s air filtration system, please ask one of our team members for guidance.
